After all applications are received by the deadline, the State Department who are performing the lottery will select a hundred thousand winners random by their computer program. A maximum of 50,000 will eventually obtain the free green card. The remaining who are also initially chosen will not be qualify for the green card for several reasons.
All applicants who are selected will be informed promptly by post mail of their place on the list, or they can determine their winning status online. Registration is open each fall and lottery winners are notified by mail the following spring/summer.
